About this grant

SLNMA will oversee the training of 30 qualified nurses to become OT nurses with the knowledge and skills that can enable them to provide care at the surgical and recovery phase of patients who need surgical interventions, specfically mothers who need emergency C/sections. Somaliland has high maternal and infant mortatility rates and needs OT nurses. Maternal mortality is about 1044-1400 per 100,000 live births and neonatal mortality is about 41-40 per 1,000. At the same time, there are only 12 OT nurses in the whole country and they are unequally distributed in the six regions of Somaliland. Hargeisa group hospital which serves a population of over a million currently only has 1 qualified nurse who has received OT nursing specialty training. SLNMA will work with the Ministry of Health to equally distribute trained nurses to the six referral hospitals of Somaliland on graduation.
